2019
A trio of mining giants – Glencore, Eurasian Resources Group (ERG), and China Molybdenum Co. (CMOC) – came together with a bold vision. They set out to shine a light on every step of the battery mineral journey, from remote mines to electric vehicles. This initiative, which would become ReSource, was born by the industry, for the industry.
-
Chapter#1
The founders proposed ReSource as a solution to one of their toughest shared challenges: tracing the origins of cobalt, a critical EV battery ingredient, and ensuring it was responsibly produced.
What began as a quest for physical traceability has since grown into something much larger – a comprehensive platform enabling Critical Minerals Traceability & ESG Performance & Compliance Reporting, as well as Battery Passports.
-
Connecting physical and digital flows
The project allowed to link digital flows with physical material flows on the ground, with complete security.
CMOC: “ReSource is a very exciting development in global battery industry. As a global leading producer and trader of cobalt, CMOC and its trading affiliate IXM are committed to the responsible mining, processing and use of cobalt. We believe this initiative will help increase the transparency throughout the value chain. In the backdrop of the global energy transition and China pledging carbon neutrality by 2060, the battery industry is growing and expanding rapidly. A transparent and responsible supply chain, bringing together all stakeholders with this joint effort, will give end users greater confidence in cobalt as a raw material.
-
Chapter#2
In 2022, together with Global Battery Alliance and Tesla ReSource has introduced a prototype “battery passport” – a digital record accompanying a battery – containing data on where its materials came from, the greenhouse gases emitted in producing it and checks on human rights compliance. In short, ReSource proved it could not only track physical cobalt units, but also capture the sustainability story attached to those units.
-
The world’s first battery passport, showcasing full end-to-end traceability
“Tesla piloted the Battery Passport and collected the relevant environmental and social data points on our cobalt supply chain. While a lot more work needs to be done to cover all relevant areas across battery mineral supply chains, standard reporting across a level playing field certainly has a role to play in the transition towards sustainable energy.”
-
Industry at our Core
Important aspect of ReSource’s identity: it is industry-led and collaborative at its core. Rather than being an external solution imposed on the sector, it was built within the sector by its own leaders, ensuring that it is tailor-made for battery raw materials and refined through continual input from actual supply chain experts.
-
Chapter#3
Guided by an industry-representative advisory board and has drawn in respected independent organizations as stakeholders. Notably, the Responsible Minerals Initiative (RMI) and the Cobalt Institute joined as strategic advisors to ReSource, ensuring that the solution stays aligned with world-class best practices and addresses the real concerns of the industry.
-
Glencore
Glencore — Advancing Nickel Traceability and ESG Data Exchange.
Leveraging the ReSource platform, Glencore demonstrates that its nickel is responsibly sourced.
-
CMOC
CMOC — Boosting Cobalt Traceability & IXM Adoption.
In 2024, the ReSource platform delivered comprehensive, end-to-end traceability for all cobalt hydroxide from the TFM and KFM mines.
-
ERG
ERG — Big Bags Traceability.
ERG is fulfilling its sustainability commitments by leveraging ReSource to drive responsible, sustainable cobalt mining.
-
Chapter#4
This is not just an “about us” story for a company; it’s a story about an industry taking charge of its future, hand-in-hand with its stakeholders. And as we look to the road ahead, ReSource remains committed to driving positive change, ensuring that every battery – and every mineral inside it – carries a legacy of responsibility and transparency.
-
Today
ReSource helps trace graphite, lithium, cobalt & nickel – all key ingredients in EV batteries. The platform now connects participants across the entire battery supply chain, from large-scale mines to chemical refiners, battery makers, and EV brands around the globe. Companies such as CMOC, ERG, Glencore, and others are part of the ReSource network, using the system to assure their materials are responsibly sourced.
